Where to Stay in Amsterdam Without Paying Tourist Prices

When I arrived in Amsterdam I spent three nights in a Jordaan Airbnb while I looked for a room. It cost more per night than my monthly rent contribution does now. That experience focused my thinking on where visitors should actually stay.

Jordaan — beautiful, worth it if money is not the issue

Canal houses, quiet streets at night, Noordermarkt on Saturday. Extremely convenient for the centre. Airbnbs here start around €120 per night for a basic private room. For a short stay where you want to feel Amsterdam’s best-known neighbourhood, it’s genuinely good. For a week-long stay on a budget, look elsewhere.

De Pijp — lively, better value, real neighbourhood

South of the centre, directly connected by Metro 52. Airbnbs here run €80–110 per night for a comparable room. The Albert Cuyp market is a five-minute walk. Restaurants on every street. Less tourist-heavy than the Jordaan while still being extremely convenient. My honest recommendation for most visitors.

Noord — cheapest, requires ferry, different city

Airbnbs in Noord run €55–80 per night and the supply is growing. The ferry to Centraal takes 3 minutes and runs 24 hours on the Buiksloterweg route. If you’re comfortable with a ferry as your commute — and it’s a pleasant commute — Noord gives you the best value in Amsterdam. The neighbourhood has good restaurants and feels genuinely local. The trade-off is that you are not in Amsterdam in the sense most visitors picture it.

One thing nobody tells you: check the Amsterdam tourist tax. It’s currently 12.5% of the room price, added to Airbnb and hotel bookings. Budget for it.
