Budget Accommodation in Den Haag: Where to Sleep for Under €60/Night

Den Haag is not a cheap city. But it is cheaper than Amsterdam, and if you know where to look there are options that do not require selling a kidney. Here is everything I know about sleeping cheaply in Den Haag, with actual prices.

Hostels

Den Haag does not have the hostel infrastructure of Amsterdam. That is the honest answer. There are a handful of options but the choice is limited.

The most reliable budget option is one of the small hostels near Den Haag Centraal — dorms from around €25–30/night, private rooms from €55–70. Check Hostelworld for current listings — options change. The quality varies. Read recent reviews specifically for cleanliness and noise, not the overall score.

Budget hotels

The €50–65/night range gets you a perfectly functional, completely characterless room near the centre. The big chains (ibis, Campanile) deliver consistent value at this price point. Not interesting but reliable. If you are arriving late and leaving early, this is fine.

Check Booking.com for last-minute deals — Den Haag hotels fill less completely than Amsterdam and you can sometimes find mid-range rooms at budget prices within a week of arrival.

Budget Airbnb neighbourhoods

The trick with Airbnb in Den Haag is knowing which neighbourhoods have affordable options without terrible connections. My ranking:

Transvaal: cheapest. €40–55/night for a private room is achievable. Multicultural, genuine, not pretty but functional. Good tram connections. The Haagse Markt is walkable. Your host will probably be the most interesting person you meet on the trip.

Laakhaven/Schilderswijk edge: slightly more expensive but the area has more going on. €50–65/night range. Creative neighbours, good cycling connections.

Moerwijk: further out, very cheap (€35–50/night), but the tram connections are slightly worse and there is less to walk to. Worth it for a longer stay where you can establish a routine.

The mistake everyone makes

Booking near Scheveningen or in the centre without checking transport options. Scheveningen looks cheap off-season but you will pay €20 in tram fares per day to get anywhere. The centre looks convenient but accommodation in the actual city centre is not meaningfully cheaper than Statenkwartier and has less of a neighbourhood feel.

Student housing short-term

If you are staying more than two weeks and have a Dutch bank account, some student accommodation providers offer short-term sublets, especially in summer when students go home. Check local Facebook groups for Den Haag housing — €400–600/month for a room is achievable this way, which is dramatically cheaper than any hotel.
