Getting Around Den Haag: Tram, Bike, and the Coastal Line
Den Haag has an excellent public transport network that most visitors don’t fully understand. Here is the practical version.
The tram network
The HTM tram network covers the city comprehensively. The trams run frequently, are reliable, and reach most places worth going. A single journey ticket costs €1.82 with an OV-chipkaart, or €4.50 for a day ticket. The OV-chipkaart is the standard transit card used across the Netherlands — you tap in and tap out on every journey.
The coastal tram
Line 11 runs from Den Haag Centraal to Scheveningen in about 20 minutes. This is the beach tram and it is the correct way to go to the coast — faster than cycling in bad weather, cheaper than a taxi at all times.
The Interurban tram (RandstadRail line 4) connects Den Haag to Delft and Rotterdam. It runs on a different fare system from the city tram. Check before you board.
Cycling
Den Haag is a cycling city in the Dutch sense — flat, well-infrastructure’d, with dedicated lanes on most main roads. The journey from the Statenkwartier to Scheveningen takes about 25 minutes by bike. The journey from the centre to the Peace Palace neighbourhood: 15 minutes. For stays of more than a few days, renting or buying a bike makes everything easier. OV-fiets (the NS bike rental scheme available at train stations) is €4.45/day with an OV-chipkaart.
