Renting a Flat in Copenhagen: What I Wish I Had Known Before I Started

I found my flat in Frederiksberg on my third week in Copenhagen after three weeks of understanding why people warned me about the rental market. The market is tight, moves fast, and has requirements that are significant even by northern European standards.

The platforms: BoligPortal (boligportal.dk) is the main platform for private rentals. Lejebolig (lejebolig.dk) is the alternative. Both require registration and good listings at reasonable prices disappear within hours. Set up alerts for your search criteria and respond immediately.

What landlords require: CPR number (get this first), three months of pay slips or equivalent income documentation, and a deposit of typically three months’ rent plus one month prepaid. The total upfront cost for a DKK 12,000/month flat is DKK 48,000 (€6,400). This is the number you need to have ready.

Practical first step: get your CPR number before anything else. Without it you cannot sign a rental contract, open a bank account, or access most Danish services. Register at your local Borgerservice (kk.dk/borgerservice) with your passport and proof of address. Book an appointment online — walk-in times are long.
