The Miradouro Drink: Lisbon’s Most Honest Ritual
Lisbon has viewpoints on every hill and the correct thing to do at each of them is buy a beer from the kiosk and stand there. This is not a sophisticated activity. It is the activity.
The Miradouro da Graça (Largo da Graça, Alfama) is the one I prefer because it is the least visited of the main miradouros and has the best view of the castle and the river together. The kiosk sells Super Bock in cans for about two euros. You take your can, you find a wall or a bench, you look at the city. This is the whole thing.
Miradouro da Senhora do Monte (Rua da Senhora do Monte, Graça) is the highest point with the widest view — on a clear evening you can see the 25 de Abril bridge and the Cristo Rei statue across the river and the Tagus running out toward the Atlantic. It gets more crowded in summer but in spring it is manageable. The kiosk there is better stocked than most.
Miradouro de Santa Catarina (Rua de Santa Catarina, Bica) is in Bica, which puts it between Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré, and tends to attract a younger crowd. There is a small bar as well as the kiosk. The view west toward Belém at sunset is the best argument for going.
The ritual is the same at all of them: a drink, a view, and the specific Lisbon light that happens in the hour before dark, which is worth going out of your way for at any time of year.
