Where to Stay in Lisbon: A Neighbourhood Guide That Doesn’t Lie to You

I live in Mouraria and I would not necessarily recommend it for a first visit. This is an honest position: it is hilly, the streets are narrow, the nearest Metro is Martim Moniz which is further than you want to walk with luggage. I stayed here because I found a flat here. For a visitor, there are better decisions.

The best neighbourhood for a first visit is Chiado or Bairro Alto. Central, walkable, Metro-accessible (Green and Blue lines at Baixa-Chiado), and close enough to Alfama, Belém, and LX Factory that everything is reachable in under 20 minutes. Rua do Carmo (Rua do Carmo, Chiado) is the street I would put a first-time visitor on.

For a longer stay or a return visit, consider Cais do Sodré or Santos. More local, still central, on the waterfront, with the best bar and restaurant density in the city. The Pink Street (Rua Nova do Carvalho, Cais do Sodré) area is the nightlife epicentre and gets loud after midnight, which is either an asset or a liability depending on your preferences.

Avoid: Rossio and Restauradores for anything other than the cheapest possible option. The hotels there are fine in the way airports are fine — functional, impersonal, not the city. Budget well-spent elsewhere. Check Booking.com filtered to Chiado or Santos for the range.
